What is the Ordination Council?
In Southern Baptist life, ordination is a significant and sacred recognition of a man's call to ministry. While the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) does not have a hierarchical structure or a centralized authority to ordain ministers, ordination is typically carried out at the local church level in cooperation with an ordination council—a group of ordained men who examine and affirm a candidate’s calling, doctrinal beliefs, and spiritual maturity.
The Ordination Council (also known as the Presbytery) is usually formed at the request of a local church that believes a Licensed Minister is ready to be ordained into the pastoral capacity. The council's responsibility is to:
Examine the candidate’s testimony of salvation and call to ministry
Evaluate his understanding of Scripture, Theology, and Doctrine
Assess his character, moral conduct, and spiritual readiness
Offer a recommendation to the church regarding whether to proceed with ordination
This process helps to maintain doctrinal soundness, ministry integrity, and biblical faithfulness among those who are publicly recognized as ministers of the Gospel.
Historically, Southern Baptists have emphasized the autonomy of the local church, meaning each congregation has the final authority to ordain a man into the ministry. However, forming an ordination council brings wisdom, accountability, and affirmation from a broader body of seasoned male leaders. This cooperative spirit is a hallmark of Baptist ecclesiology and reflects the shared responsibility of nurturing and affirming pastoral leadership.
Today, ordination councils continue to serve an important role in Southern Baptist life, especially within associations and fellowships of churches, where they help ensure that those entering ministry are biblically grounded, spiritually mature, and truly called by God.

Rev. John Roberson
Rev. John Roberson is a faithful servant of the Lord whose spiritual journey began in 1976 when he was saved by the grace of God. After decades of walking with Christ and serving in various capacities, John surrendered to the call to preach in 2009. On August 12, 2012, he was ordained into the ministry, after he accepted the role of pastor at Palmyra Missionary Baptist Church — a congregation he continues to shepherd with steadfast love and leadership.
Throughout his ministry, Rev. Roberson has remained committed to nurturing the spiritual growth of others, especially those beginning their journey in ministry. He considers it a true blessing to serve on the ordination council, where he is entrusted with examining and encouraging young men who have answered God’s call. For him, this is not just a responsibility but a sacred opportunity to help equip the next generation of church leaders with wisdom, faith, and sound doctrine.
In a time when many seasoned pastors are retiring or being called home to Glory, Rev. Roberson expresses deep gratitude for the young men stepping up to carry on the work of the Gospel. He finds hope and encouragement in seeing God raise up new voices to continue proclaiming His truth. Rev. Roberson's life and ministry stand as a testament to God's faithfulness, and he remains committed to serving, mentoring, and leading by example for as long as the Lord allows.

With 38 years of experience behind the pulpit, Rev. Hughes brings a deep well of wisdom, insight, and spiritual leadership to every role he undertakes. Currently, he is serving as pastor of Seven Creeks Missionary Baptist Church — a congregation he is leading for the second time in his ministry. His return to Seven Creeks is a testament to the trust and respect he has earned over the years from the churches and communities he has served.
